Who do you think cooked up sandwich name and got it popular? Do you know that Hawaii Islands were named Sandwich Islands before? What is surprising that is partly how the name sandwich got popular. Let me take a bite of sandwich, 1 second. OK, continuing with an interesting name.

Back in 1762, a bit longer than yesterday the sandwich had a debut in England. Sandwich became popular and was named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in 1762. There were similar types of food in Mediterranean history before, but not with one name and certainty.

That happened more than 50 years later in 1815 when sandwich had its place in American cookbook. 

Captain James Cook named Hawaii Islands the Sandwich Islands in 1778, it was later changed to Hawaii. Captain Cook had named the islands in honor of John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich who sponsored expeditions.

With names as Cook Islands or Sandwich Islands, no wonder food and geography meet in one place. Captain James Cook first expedition was in 1768, a journey that brought sandwich closer to people. In his sea trips with sometimes about 100 crewmen, food played a major factor. Sandwich was easy to for sailors, quick and strong food when a long journey took place.

In US today, about 300 million sandwiches are eaten everyday, which is about 1 sandwich for every American. Turkey sandwich is considered one of the most popular in the United States.

Sandwiches can not only be bought but you can made a sandwich of your choose. It can be 3 times cheaper or even more to make homemade sandwiches than to buy in the city. Homemade sandwiches with American cheese, bread, lettuce, tomato can cost about $1.50 or more to make. Meantime, few decades ago it could have cost of $0.50 or so.

New York sandwich price

Pretty much in New York City and San Francisco sandwiches are the most expensive in US, and can go over $10. In Philadelphia, they can cost 30% or less than in New York City. Sometimes, onions, ketchup, pickles and other add up to the cost. Even, one of the most expensive sandwiches was made in New York City. It was called “Quintessential Grilled Cheese” and cost than $200. It has included French Pullman champagne bread, Caciocavallo Podolico cheese.
